The American Party in the first Reagan Administration

The party's divisions in 1980 were nearly lethal. However, as the Reagan administration began, American Party leaders began to pick up the pieces and start over. The party started a party newsletter entitled "The American," which was published 1983-1992. In the midterm elections of 1982, the party sponsored three candidates for U.S. Senate and two for the U.S. House, a slight improvement over 1980. The party was making progress at becoming renewed.

The 3d American Party National Convention

The party's third national convention was held in Charlotte NC, 12/1-4/1983. Determined to avoid the pitfalls of the 1980 convention, the delegates nominated Delmar Dennis for President. Dennis was a famous ex-KKK member who became a FBI informant on Klan activities in the 1960s. Traves Brownlee of DE was nominated for Vice President.

The Campaign of 1984

Dennis made a valiant effort to spread the message of the American Party. He reported that he traveled around the nation and "was surprised to discover that the local media welcomed me and reported my campaign and my party's position quite fairly." The party offered three candidates for U.S. House in 1984 and one for the Senate.
