He will have to force a primary. The Convention is going to nominate Simmons.

Well, if there's anything the Paulites are good at, it's packing caucuses and conventions. That's where Paul did the best last year.

All these Republicans want in, and yet we can't get a single ambitious state senator to smell blood in the water and take on Dodd in the primary? Shame.

No one has a shot against Simmons.

Simmons has the advantage by virtue of having Dodd as his opponent, not because he's a particularly strong candidate.

Republicans are coming out of the woodworks to run against Chris Dodd, yet they have barely been able to hold a seat in the House or in the state legislature. Caligiuri should run for Congress instead of wasting his time running for the Senate.

He wouldn't win - too right-wing. I doubt even Simmons or Shays could win back their old seats. Jodi Rell is probably the only Connecticut Republican who could carry a congressional race, but why would she run for Congress? Bass has a good chance of retaking the now open NH-2 seat, so I expect the GOP will have at least one Republican in the New England delegation again.

This is very unusual for Connecticut. Contested Primaries are rare and primaries with more than two candidates are even rarer. Everyone other than Simmons better be collecting Signatures. I think he has a lock on the Convention endorsement.

There's a slim opening for Dodd in the general election if McMahon can beat Simmons in this primary. The ideal R nominee for Dodd would be Caliguiri but I don't think that is going to happen.

That the second-place finisher wasn't in the first poll probably explains a lot of it, but 14 points (and in a crowded primary, 42 to 28 is worse than, say, 56 to 42) ain't good.

Who will be the first to switch?

hard to say, but maybe none of them wil. The Lt. Gov. is probably going to run for Governor and a couple of prominent St. Reps and St. Sens. are looking at it too.

the Lt Gov is a nobody who certainly will not scare anyone away. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't run.

Is McMahon running as a teabagger? And is the fact that Simmons carries a teabag in his pocket going to be enough to fool them?
