Description |
Gov. Holden was impeached and removed as governor. Lt. Governor Caldwell assumed the office of Governor.
The Conservative Party gained control of the legislature in 1870, primarily due to its use of the Klan to discourage Republican turnout. The first actions of the legislature were to remove enough Republican legislators to give the Conservative Party a two-thirds margin. The legislature then proceeded to impeach the Governor for calling out the state militia to quell Klan activity during the 1870 election.
Note: the NC Manual has conflicting information about the date Holden turned the office over to Caldwell.
