| Description |
When Sen. Pool's seat came up for re-election, the Conservative Party had already taken control of the North Carolina legislature, and it was a foregone conclusion that Pool would not be re-elected. However, a new drama emerged in the Conservative Party.
A.S. Merrimon, who had just lost the race for NC Governor by a very narrow margin, sought the Senate seat. When the Conservative legislative caucus met, however, it endorsed former Gov. Zebulon B. Vance. The two men became intense political enemies as they vied for the Senate seat. Merrimon approached the Republican minority in the legislature and promised to have a moderate voting record if they would support him against Vance. The Republicans agreed to the deal, and with their assistance, Merrimon was elected (New York Times, 10/14/1878).
