Description |
The seat was vacant from 3/4/1853 to 12/6/1854 due to the inability of the legislature to elect a Senator.
The legislature of 1852 was nearly evenly divided, with 81 Democrats and 79 Whigs. The Democratic caucus nominated James C. Dobbin, but St. Sen. Saunders objected because Dobbin had supported the secession movement in 1851. In the early ballots, many Whigs voted either with the states rights Democrats for Dobbin or with the union Democrats for Saunders. When the Whigs settled on U.S. Rep. Kenneth Raynor, he immediately moved into first place, polling the entire Whig vote save one (with the vote of one union Democrat).
The Democrats widened their majority in the elections of 1854. The seat having been vacant for two years, the Democratic caucus settled on Gov. Reid as their nominee and elected him on the first ballot of the new legislature.
