| Description |
The Democratic Party won a stunning victory in the 1986 U.S. Senate races, taking a net of eight seats from the Republicans. The Democrats won a narrow 50-48% victory in the nationwide popular vote, a much closer margin than in 1980. The new Senate stood at 55 Democrats and 45 Republicans.
New U.S. Senators: Shelby (D-AL), McCain (R-AZ), Wirth (D-CO), Graham (D-FL), Fowler (D-GA), Breaux (D-LA), Mikulski (D-MD), Bond (R-MO), Reid (D-NV), Sanford (D-NC), Conrad (D-ND), Daschle (D-SD), and Adams (D-WA).
