| Description |
The U.S. Senate elections of 1984 were roughly a draw. The Republicans won a narrow victory in the aggregate popular vote for the first time since 1972, but they lost a net of one seat to the Democrats. The Republicans won 18 seats to 16 for the Democrats, and the next Senate had 53 Republicans to 47 Democrats.
New U.S. Senators: Simon (D-IL), Harkin (D-IA), McConnell (R-KY), Kerry (D-MA), Gore (D-TN), Gramm (R-TX), Evans (R-WA), and Rockefeller (D-WV).
