| Description |
The Republican Party scored a landslide in U.S. Senate races of 1980, taking control for the first time since 1955. Although they lost the popular vote by a margin of 52-45, they won 22 seats to 12 for the Democrats, a gain of 12 seats for the GOP. The new Senate stood at 53 Republicans, 46 Democrats, and one Independent.
New U.S. Senators: Denton (AL), Murkowski (AK), Dodd (CT), Hawkins (FL), Mattingly (GA), Symms (ID), Dixon (IL), Quayle (IN), Grassley (IA), Rudman (NH), D'Amato (NY), East (NC), Andrews (ND), Nickles (OK), Specter (PA), Abdnor (SD), Gordon (WA), and Kasten (WI).
