Description |
This seat includes the market towns of Knutsford, Wilmslow and Alderley Edge and their environs. One of the most prosperous areas in England, awash with beautiful scenery and expensive housing, its population is predominantly wealthy and middle class and hsitorically Conservative leaning. Every social indicator suggests that this is Tory heartland - low unemployment, very few manual workers and a huge majority of multiple car-owning white collar workers. The Conservatives won every election here through to 1997 when Neil Hamilton, implicated in the sleaze allegations, crashed to defeat at the hands of independent candidate and former BBC war correspondent Martin Bell. Mr Bell kept to his promise of serving a single term and normal service resumed in 2001 with former Tory leader William Hague's close confidante George Osborne winning the seat easily. However, the constituency was no longer the Conservatives' fifth safest, having fallen to 42nd.
