| Description |
The People's Party was a loose association of supporters of U.S. Sen. Samuel Houston TX. On 4/20/1860, the party held what it termed a national convention to nominate Houston for US President on the San Jacinto Battlefield in Texas. The gathering did not nominate a VP candidate, expecting later gatherings to serve that purpose. These later mass meetings were held in northern cities such as NYC on 5/30/1860, which also failed to nominate a VP candidate. Houston withdrew from the race on 8/15/1860.
