Description |
Britt contested the election. The original returns showed Britt had won by 13 votes. The Buncombe County Board of Canvassers, which was composed of 28 Democrats, counted 22 questionable Democratic ballots from Sandy Mush Township, resulting in a 9-vote Weaver victory [New York Times, 11/12 and 18/1916].
Britt challenged the result to the U.S. House. When the House assembled in 1917, the third party Representatives voted with the Democrats to organize the House. They also supported the Democratic decision to seat Weaver. Britt continued his challenge throughout the Congress. After the special elections of 1918 gave the Republicans control of the lame duck Congress, Britt renewed his challenge. On 3/1/1919, the House voted 182-173 along party lines to seat Britt [NYT 3/2/1919]. Britt thus served in the House for three days of this Congress.
