Crean ran such a nasty campaign he was censured by the Orange County GOP.

Here's a list of Republican candidates shown as having spent money. No results, I think the best source is either finding an 83/84 book of results for the 82 primary, or hoping that an America Votes! for that year is around.

SZEKELY, DEBORAH
MCCOLL, WILLIAM MD
PACKARD, RONALD C

And I think that the Mary Schmitz listed is the wife of John Schmitz and the mother of Mary Kay Letourneau

Searching 1982 articles from the LA Times does not produce anything mentioning the specific results. Eh, it's an LA paper covering a San Diego race. It's no "Tulsa World" when it comes to delivering specific vote totals.

If anybody has America Votes for 1983, that could be a pretty good source for the full numbers.

Revising the list of candidates, using info from the LA Times (5/15/1982 LAT)

*- Johnnie Robert Crean, Owner of Alfa Leisure Inc.
*- Deborah Szekely, Owner of the Golden Door Spa
*- William "Bill" McColl, Orthopedic Surgeon, NFL Reciever, Lost Congressional bids in 1970 (to Rousselot) and 1972
*- Ron Packard, Mayor of Carlsbad
*- Stanley W. Legro, Assistant Administator of the EPA under Ford
*- James M. Rady, Escondido City Councilman
*- Mary Schmitz, Wife of John Schmitz
*- Charles Gordon "Chuck" Kenney, Mission Viejo real estate broker
*- Jerry Shaw, President of the Orange County Board of Education
*- Thomas Mauro, South Laguna physician, lost a 1976 bid for the 40th district
*- Lawrene Nixon Anfinson, Richard Nixon's niece
*- Mike Shaeffer, Frequent candidate from San Diego
*- Donald Blake Martinson, Vista lawyer
*- Robert "Bob" Curtis, Former assistant secretary of the California GOP, San Clemente resident
*- Elizabeth Davis, Claims to be the great-granddaughter of the Kings of Samoa
*- Art Sanders, Poway high school teacher and unsuccessful Democratic Congressional candidate in 1980
*- Robert DeCarlo, Capistrano Beach Law clerk
*- Martin Kinkade, Rancho Santa Fe Businessman

No luck on actual results, although articles mention how the vote total went from Crean by 93, to Crean by 100, and the final results were Crean by 92

I don't know why this race was entered as occuring on 6/23/82, since that's a wednesday, and 15 days after the real date.

Six more California primaries need to be switched to the 8th of June too: [Link]

Yeeeeeeeeeah.. I finally got to find these returns (thanks to searching and finding that it was located in a local university library).

Now we can revel in the glory of this argument for runoff primaries.

Forever and ever, Johnnie Crean will be the king of the absurdly low percentage plurality victory
