Description Following a no-confidence vote against the Liberal government, Governor General Michaelle Jean dissolved the 38th Parliament on November 29, 2005 and called an election.

On January 23, Stephen Harper's Conservatives won 124 seats, compared to 103 seats for the Liberals. Prime Minister Paul Martin conceded defeat that night, and resigned as prime minister the next morning at 9:45 am. At 6:45 pm, Governor General Michaëlle Jean formally asked Harper to form a government.
