Description |
Hughes was nominated on the first ballot at the Conservative state convention on 5/1/1872. He led on the first ballot, and while the results were being tabulated, delegates supporting other candidates shifted to him for a unanimous nomination (Raleigh Sentinel, 5/4/1872).
Lt. Gov. Brogden became the Governor on 7/14/1874, and the office of Lt. Governor was vacant until 1877.
