Description |
John McCullough fell 3,104 vote short of a majority in the General Election of 1902. The joint assembly convened on October 1 to hear the report of the canvassing committee and, in the case of the office of Governor, to vote by joint ballot for the three candidates who received the greatest number of votes. On the first ballot, when the ballots were taken and counted, the result was as follows:
Total votes cast: 268
Percent: 100
Necessary for election: 135
50 plus 1 vote
John McCullough had: 164
61.2%
Percival Clement had: 59
22.0%
Felix McGettrick had: 45
16.8%
John McCullough was declared to be the Governor of the State of Vermont for the two years next ensuing.
**Note that legislators did not seem to be bound to the popular vote. McGettrick, the Democrat, finished a distant third in the General Election, 30 percent behind Clement, yet McGettrick finished only 6 percent behind Clement in the legislative vote.
