Description |
Needham ran on a coalition of Free Soilers and Regular Democrats.
Carlos Coolidge fell 198 votes short of a majority in the General Election of 1849. The joint assembly convened on October 11 to hear the report of the canvassing committee and, in the case of the office of Governor, to vote by joint ballot for the three candidates who received the greatest number of votes. On what appears to be the first ballot, when the ballots were taken and counted, Carlos Coolidge was elected. Crockett (III, 379) lists legislative vote as Coolidge 149 (60.3%), Needham 90 (36.4%), and Clark 8 (3.2%).
