Description |
Horace Eaton fell 708 votes short of a majority in the General Election of 1846. The joint assembly convened on October 8 to hear the report of the canvassing committee and, in the case of the office of Governor, to vote by joint ballot for the three candidates who received the greatest number of votes. On what appears to be the first ballot, when the ballots were taken and counted, Horace Eaton was elected. Eaton received 136 (61.3%), Smith 75 (33.7%), and Brainerd 11 (4.9%), according to the Journal.
