Nonpartisans are unaffiliated from any political party and refrain from the use of the "independent" label.
Nonpartisan by Mandate
In many municipal races throughout the United States, candidates are mandated by charter to run as nonpartisans. Personal political affiliations cannot be disclosed on printed ballots and advertisements, by law. Nonpartisan elections are a new trend in municipal politics as more cities and towns are opting for it.
Nonpartisan by Choice
In other races, a candidate may opt to run as a nonpartisan by choice. In these cases, candidates run against major political parties and third party nominees.
