Description | Center-left anglophone party launched by Father Walter Lin̄i after he and 21 dissident VP members were ousted from the leadership of the Vanua'aku Pati that Lin̄i founded in 1971. The NUP immediately fell into controversy when it was learned that wealthy Vietnamese businessman and naturalised Vanuatuan Đinh Văn Thân had been sponsoring, organizing and financing Lin̄i's rise and his parties from the start, inviting talk of manipulation and corruption behind-the-scenes. Thân then took control of the NUP in 1999 altogether, becoming its prime-ministerial candidate into the May 2002 general election. Lin̄i's brother Ham managed to oust Thân in 2003 and later become prime minister himself from December 11, 2004 to September 22, 2008, and has continued to lead the party. The NUP holds four seats in the 52-seat Parliament. |
