Description | One of two dominant and rival parties born from the famous Batalla de Carpintería between two independence leaders and heroes, Fructuoso Rivera and Manuel Oribe on September 19, 1836. The 'Red' (Colorado) Flag faction in the battle was led by Uruguay's first president and independence hero, Fructuoso Rivera (October 17, 1784 to January 13, 1854). The 'White' (or National) Flag was led by Uruguay's second president and independence hero, Manuel Oribe (August 26, 1792 - November 12, 1857).
Party contrasts itself with the 'batllismo' or government-centric, managed capitalism or 'corporatist' doctrines of rival Colorado Party, and identifies with free enterprise and the classical liberal thought which emerged in the 19th century as a reaction to statism. Party has been led by Uruguay's 42nd President (since March 1, 2020) Luis Lacalle Pou [Partido Nacional (PN) or Partido Blanco; "White Party"]. |
