Description | Leftist party linked to the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), founded on November 16, 1986. CONAIE was formed to represent the Mestizo and Montubio ethnic peoples of Ecuador. Party became radicalized during the administration of Ecuador's 45th President Rafael Correa (January 15, 2007 – May 24, 2017), and involved itself in rioting and rebellion during his rule. Before then, party had united with January 21, 2000 coup-leader Lucio Gutiérrez in his successful 2002 bid for the presidency. Party preaches what is called 'radical environmentalism' which identifies with neopaganism, animalism, ecocentrism and the use of ecoterrorism. It also supports plurinationalism
(plurinacionalismo), which believes that several 'nations' form one body within an organized community. Party nominated as its 2021 presidential candidate indigenous activist Yaku Pérez, who placed third that year. It saw significant electoral gains in 2021, winning 27 seats in the National Assembly. Pérez departed on May 19, 2021 to form Somos Agua on August 14, 2021. MUPP has been led by indigenous leader Marlon Santi since June 14, 2016 [Movimiento de Unidad Plurinacional Pachakutik (MUPP or MUPP-18); Pachakutik Plurinational Unity Movement] |
