DescriptionSocial-democrat to socialist association co-founded by Manuel Córdova Galarza and the former president of Ecuador between 1988 and 1992, Rodrigo Borja Cevallos. Association turned into a party on May 5, 1978. Party faced years of internal crisis which came to a head 2013, after multiple dissidents split off to form or join the AVANZA and Creando Oportunidades parties. Party then dissolved on July 9, 2013. Party was re-born and re-registered on August 18, 2016 under the leadership of Wilma Andrade. Party nominated businessman Xavier Hervas as its presidential candidate in 2021, who brought to ID its best result in 23 years and 18 seats in the National Assembly (Hervas would in 2023 become the presidential nominee of the RETO Movement). Party has been led by Enrique Chavez since 2022 [Izquierda Democrática (ID)].
