Description | One-time predominant party holding a 20-year quasi-authoritarian rein over Lesotho since its independence in 1966.
Party was launched in 1958 by tribal chief Leabua Jonathan, who was to become Lesotho’s first prime minister (July 7, 1965 – January 20, 1986; deposed). Party was founded as the Basutoland National Party (BNP) with the support of South Africa and the Roman Catholic church.
The BNP under Leabua Jonathan held almost absolute power but faced a threat and eventual armed revolt in the 70s, led primarily by Ntsu Mokhehle's Basutoland Congress Party (BCP).
After Jonathan was deposed in 1986, the BCP took command of the country seven years later, imposing its own dominance throughout the 1990s.
After a period of decline, the BNP sought new leadership in the form of tribal chief Thesele Maseribane, who joined his party in coalition with Prime Minister Thomas Thabane’s All Basotho Convention (ABC) after elections held on June 3, 2017. Maseribane served as Thabane's Minister of Communications, Science and Technology. |
