Center-left party launched and led by former Prime Minister (April 2, 1993 to May 29, 1998) and Basutoland Congress Party (BCP) founder Ntsu Mokhehle after he was dismissed by the BCP in 1997.
The LCD overwhelmingly won the general elections of May 1998, and, upon Mokhehle’s resignation, the LCD's new leader Pakalitha Mosisili became prime minister (May 1998 to June 2012 and again from March 2015 to June 2017).
Party has since been led by former Deputy Prime Minister Mothetjoa Metsing and holds 11 seats in the 120-seat Parliament.
