Left-wing party and successor to the authoritarian Marxist-Leninist Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party (1956-1989) led and launched by Communist leader János Kádár, who presided over a period of repression and mass executions following the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Party leadership collapsed after the anti-Soviet events of the Summer of 1989 and new leaders instantly disavowed its Marxist-Leninist character, renaming the party the Hungarian Socialist Party. Party floundered since the beginning of the 21st Century, collapsing to 10 seats (from a high of 209 in 1994) after elections held on April 3, 2022. Party joined the anti-regime United for Hungary alliance led by 2022 prime-ministerial candidate Péter Márki-Zay. Party is co-lead by MPs Bertalan Tóth and Ágnes Kunhalmi [Magyar Szocialista Párt (MSZP)].
