The modern incarnate of the Democratic Party was created April 27, 1998 by the merger of four previously independent liberal/social democratic parties in opposition to the ruling Liberal Democrats. It again merged with the center-right Liberal Party in September 2003, moderating into the main center-left opposition party. The Democratic Party first existed in post-World War II Japan and would eventually merge with the original Liberal Party to create the ruling Liberal Democrats.
