DescriptionLeft-of-center authoritarian party founded by Senegal's 1st president, Léopold Sédar Senghor. Party held absolute dominance for the first 40 year's of the nation's existence and was tightly controlled during president Senghor's 20-year reign as the nation's strongman, and indirectly so until the end of his life. Party began as the Senegalese Democratic Bloc (BDS) then rebranded itself the Senegalese Popular Bloc (BPS) on February 25 1957 upon absorbing all other competing parties within it. Party was then renamed the Socialist Party (P.S.) in December 1976. After the succession of Abdou Diouf (1981 to 2000) as President of Senegal, the nation was democratized and transformed from a one-party state to one multi-party. The PS lost its grip in 2000 and subsequently faced a severe decline in support, collapsing to 10 seats in the National Assembly during the 2001 legislative elections. Party sought alliance with incoming President Macky Sall, joining his government coalition United by Hope (Benno Bokk Yakaar, BBY) in 2012. Party's last leader was Ousmane Tanor Dieng, who resigned on July 15, 2019. Party has been leaderless ever since, does not have an office or internet site and is financially deep in the red [Parti Socialiste du Sénégal (P.S.)]
