Description | Congressman's potential Senate bid frustrates national Dems
By Julia C. Martinez
Denver Post Capitol Bureau
U.S. Rep. Mark Udall pronounced himself the best potential Democratic candidate to succeed Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell but stopped short of saying he would seek the seat.
Democratic leaders in Washington, however, did not stop short of saying Udall should stay out of the tumult created after Campbell's announcement last week that he would finish his term but not seek re-election.
"I can't think of a more exciting opportunity," Udall told reporters Friday. "I've got deep Colorado roots. I would love to serve the entire state as a U.S. senator."
Udall, 53, declared himself "the best candidate for the Democratic Party in November, if I so decide to run." |
