DescriptionIn a surprise move, Virginia Senate Democrats, with the help of retiring Sen. John Watkins, R-Powhatan, adjourned the special session Monday.

The move, if it holds up to parliamentary challenge by Republicans, will effectively enable Gov. Terry McAuliffe to reappoint Supreme Court Justice Jane Marum Roush to another interim term when her current interim term expires in mid-September.

It would also put an end to the planned special session called by McAuliffe to address the need for redrawn congressional maps to comply with a federal court order requiring changes to the 3rd District be submitted by Sept. 1.

Retiring Sen. John Watkins, R-Powhatan, sided with 19 Democrats in voting against the nomination of Court of Appeals Judge Rossie D. Alston Jr. House Republicans had nominated him to replace Justice Jane Marum Roush, a former Fairfax County Circuit judge appointed to the high court by McAuliffe last month.

Watkins, a moderate Republican, had indicated that he was concerned over the precedent of allowing politics to directly influence the firing of a sitting Supreme Court justice otherwise highly qualified to do the job.
