| Description | The Senate’s Republican majority on Wednesday pushed through a partisan rule change that will make it possible to consider GOP-backed legislation without the support of any Democrats.
Under the move, approved 20-10 along party lines, the decades-old rule that required a two-thirds majority to take up a bill on the Senate floor was scrapped in favor of a new three-fifths rule. Instead of 21 senators, it will now take 19 senators to consider legislation.
Republicans control 20 seats in the 31-member chamber, so they will have a vote to spare. Under the old rule, which dated back to 1947, bills in recent years generally required bipartisan support. |
