Description | New Strategy: Kerry, Edwards Target Dean Supporters
The Honolulu Advertiser
John Kerry and John Edwards both figure that the path to victory in Minnesota's Democratic presidential caucuses next Tuesday is to win over the followers of former rival Howard Dean.
Dean folded his campaign last week, but his supporters - he estimates them at about 7,000 strong - still loom large in the race for the state's 72 pledged delegates to the Democratic convention.
"We're aware that their support is very crucial, especially the folks who have not been involved," said Buck Humphrey, Minnesota co-chairman of Kerry's campaign.
Dozens of Dean's leading volunteers decided Thursday night to encourage like-minded voters to support Edwards after the North Carolina senator made a personal appeal by phone. The Dean volunteers, who also heard pitches from representatives of Kerry and Dennis Kucinich during a meeting, planned to work phones and go door to door on Edwards' behalf, said St. Paul resident Anne White, who attended the meeting.
At a campaign rally in St. Paul earlier this week, Edwards made time to meet privately with 25 prominent Dean activists. In a nod to Dean's appeal as an antiestablishment candidate, Edwards played up his shallow roots in Washington and his respect for Dean, according to Randy Schubring, one of the activists. |
