WASHINGTON (AP) — A group of moderate Republicans said Wednesday they are pouring a half-million dollars into two hotly contested elections in Pennsylvania — more money than to any other state this year.

A soft-money group that works with the Republican Main Street Partnership has identified Sen. Arlen Specter and House hopeful Melissa Brown in Pennsylvania's 13th Congressional District as two of their top priority races this year. Both Specter and Brown are facing tough challenges in the state's April 27 primary.

"We're going to spend more money than usual, period, and probably more time than usual" in Pennsylvania, said Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., a Partnership board member and the former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

"We intend to be impact players," Davis said.

Of $1 million that the soft-money group, the Main Street Individual Fund, plans to spend in Senate and House races this year, it has earmarked $450,000 to help Specter and $72,000 so far for Brown. That money is largely being spent on radio ads and direct mail flyers.
