DescriptionConservative warrior Steve King has decided not to risk a bid for U.S. Senate, leaving Iowa Republicans still searching for their candidate in the first open U.S. Senate seat in Iowa in 40 years.

King announced the news on the social media service Twitter late Friday.

“I will not run for Senate in 2014. A Senate race takes me out of urgent battles in Congress that can’t wait until 2015. Many thanks to all,” a message on his account said.

The congressman’s exit from Senate contention opens the gates for lesser-known Republicans to jump in for what could be a multi-candidate primary. Until now, the others had been tip-toeing around King, certain they couldn’t beat him, but plotting strategies in case he opted out.
