| Description | President Obama's campaign feared no potential Republican challenger more than Jon Huntsman, the former Utah governor who dropped out of the race in late January, according to a top campaign official.
Obama campaign manager Jim Messina revealed this week that Huntsman, who stepped down as Obama's ambassador to China in April of 2011 in order to run for the Republican nomination, would have been the most 'difficult' candidate for Obama to beat.
'I think we were honest about our concerns about Huntsman,' Messina told Politico.
'I think Huntsman would have been a very tough general election candidate,' he continued. 'He’s a good guy. We looked at his profile in a general election and thought he would have been difficult.'
Obama campaign officials were concerned that Huntsman's center-right politics, along with his experience in the private sector and in foreign diplomacy would make him an attractive alternative to Obama for disaffected Democrats.
But Huntsman's campaign never caught fire with Republicans, so Democrats never had a chance to vote for him. |
