Description | Media executive Tom Allon left the Democratic Party to run for New York City mayor as a Republican next year, paving the way for a potentially competitive race for the GOP nomination.
Allon, who is also planning to seek the mayoralty on the Liberal Party line, said he will be running a “fusion” candidacy as a centrist. Allon denied Monday that the party switch has anything to do with his poor showing in the polls or his anemic fundraising.
Instead, Allon said, he’s becoming a Republican because of what he called “systemic corruption” in the Democratic Party and because he believes he’s more ideologically “in sync with the liberal Republican wing of the GOP.”
Allon said he’s hopeful Republican leaders will coalesce around his candidacy, but he pledged to challenge anyone for the nomination. Allon said he has no recollection of ever voting for a GOP presidential candidate and repeatedly declined Monday to say whom he will support for president next month. |
