DescriptionA backbench MP's motion to study the rights of the fetus was defeated in a House of Commons vote Wednesday evening.

Status of Women Minister Rona Ambrose surprised many by voting for the motion. Other ministers who voted in favour of the motion included Peter Van Loan, Peter Penashue, Jason Kenney, Julian Fantino, Gail Shea, Ed Fast and Gerry Ritz.

But the majority of MPs voted against it. The final result was 93 for and 203 against.

Tory MPs feared it would reopen a debate on abortion, something Prime Minister Stephen Harper promised not to do during the last election campaign.
