DescriptionMITT Romney is increasingly fielding attacks from members of his own party who fear that he may be blowing his election chances through his refusal to provide policy details.

Calls for him to be more precise on what he would do in the White House have grown louder since his refusal in a key television interview at the weekend to divulge what tax loopholes he might close to offset the tax cuts he proposes, and which parts of the Obama health reforms he would keep.

"The GOP [Republican Party] candidate might try explaining his policies. Just a thought," The Wall Street Journal said in a cutting editorial.

The Weekly Standard, an influential neoconservative magazine, published an open letter to Mr Romney from Peter Hansen, who runs an investment firm, which stated: "The assertion that you are more competent than President Obama strikes many people as merely that - an assertion. It would be supported by your speaking in more detail about a range of financial issues."
