Description | Texas Supreme Court candidate John Devine on Friday denied making racially charged statements about his motives for challenging incumbent Justice David Medina.
In a story in Friday's American-Statesman, two Houston lawyers — Scott Link and Frank Harmon — claimed Devine told them last year that he targeted Medina because he had a "Mexican name" and was vulnerable to a Republican primary challenge.
"It is silly and ludicrous. Those words never came out of my mouth," Devine said. "I think it's a ploy by a desperate campaign that is trying to change the subject."
Multiple attempts to reach Devine, who will face Medina in the July 31 GOP runoff, were unsuccessful Thursday. On Friday, in a phone call and in a Facebook post, Devine blamed the controversy on a smear campaign by Medina supporters. |
