DescriptionA congressional hopeful has a plan to impeach President Obama, deep in the heart of Texas.

Wes Riddle, a Republican tea party activist locked in a run-off with fellow GOPer Roger Williams in Texas’ 25th congressional district, is campaigning on a conspiracy theory even more bizarre than the fantasy that the United Nations and George Soros are conspiring to eliminate the game of golf.

Riddle, a retired Army officer from Gatesville, wants to impeach Obama for “giving away” seven Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea islands near Siberia to Russia.

(Yes, even though those islands were ceded in 1991 under President George H.W. Bush.)

I'd question his judgment just for living in Gatesville. Hellhole.

Yeah, I'm real upset that we don't presently have a claim on those islands west of the line (leaving aside the fact it was an issue that was correctly decided under the administration of George H.W. Bush). These islands have had a history of territorial disputation; Japan and the USA both used to claim Wrangel Island, for example. But in every case, Russia'a claim was indisputably the strongest. The idea that these islands should belong to us "because we won the Cold War" is about the dumbest notion I have ever come across.

These islands are potentially quite valuable (although it may be a while before that potential is realized), so its a shame they belong to another country. But they do.

Interesting fact about Wrangel Island: Pygmy woolly mammoths persisted there until about the year 500 BC.

I'm conflicted on because while I don't like Tea Party conspiracy theories, I do love AWG conspiracy theories and we will need these islands when the Lovelock prophecies come true.

OK, it was 1700 BC, not 500.

I used to love Gatesville. My grandparents lived there and as the youngest grandchild they let me do whatever I wanted. I seem to only go there now for funerals
