DescriptionOutraged Democrats yesterday blasted Scott Brown’s demand that party icon Victoria Kennedy stay neutral in the nation’s marquee Senate race, while one conservative pundit said Brown’s decision to debate in the liberal lion’s den puts him in the driver’s seat to force another bout — on his own terms.

Democratic operative Scott Ferson, a former aide to U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, turned Brown’s famous phrase against him: “When you put conditions on debates, my sense is you’re starting to think of it as your own seat and not the people’s seat.”

Brown yesterday accepted a proposed Sept. 27 debate sponsored by the Democrat-dominated Edward M. Kennedy Institute at the University of Massachusetts at Boston under two conditions — that local media, not MSNBC, sponsor the showdown, and that Kennedy pledge she won’t endorse anyone in the race.

“It’s an unacceptable demand that demonstrates unbelievable arrogance,” said former state Democratic chairman Phil Johnston. “He knows full well that Vicki Kennedy is not going to be controlling this debate, and he’s just simply exposing his own weakness when he makes ridiculous demands on sponsors of debates. ... His strategy is to wiggle out of the debate at all costs.”
