DescriptionWas Scott Walker’s victory in Wisconsin Tuesday night vindication of his Churchillian refusal to back down? Not really. It was more like a “Hurt Locker” moment, with Walker as the cool, bordering on crazy, bomb defuser. Other Republican governors may admire him but few will have the guts to be him.

Walker’s victory would have meant a great deal for Wisconsin even if he had won by a hair –its AFSCME membership in the state is already down 45 percent — but for those considering following his lead, the scale of his support mattered. His seven-point victory was simply not enough to seriously advance the cause of those who would dare make even minimal demands for reform from the public-sector unions whose pay, pension and benefits packages threaten so many states and municipalities.

Saying public sector unions are doomed is wishful thinking. The unions may have gambled big in Wisconsin and lost, but in trying to reverse an election for no reason other than policy differences it was taking on an enormous challenge against a foe who turned out to have superior fundraising weapons. But the unions had another, equally important goal: to put a scare on every other public official thinking about crossing them. Wisconsin’s gain, to contradict Mitt Romney, will not echo throughout the country. What will echo is the psychotic roar of the unions.
