Description | How did Democrats come away with control of the state Senate in an otherwise humiliating night of defeat?
The answer is simple: Former Sen. John Lehman, D-Racine, did a tad better in some Republican areas of Racine County than the man at the top of the ticket, Tom Barrett.
In many wards in Senate District 21, Lehman outperformed Barrett by a dozen or so votes, allowing him to beat incumbent Sen. Van Wanggaard by 779 votes – or a little more than 1 percent – while Barrett lost the moderate county to Walker by 5,289 votes – or more than 6 percent.
Zack Kramer, head of the State Senate Democratic Committee, says the results show that even some Walker supporters like the idea of a counterbalance to the governor’s power. |
