Description | Richmond, Va. -- At some point during any given stump speech, U.S. Senate hopeful George Allen will inevitably offer up some clenched-fisted variation of the same line: "My friends, it's time for an American comeback!"
While the campaign slogan alludes to the nation's recent history, it's impossible not to apply it to Allen's own.
In an erratic and ill-fated 2006 campaign, Allen, the incumbent U.S. senator and a former governor with well-known presidential aspirations, narrowly lost his seat to Democrat Jim Webb in no small part due to a series of campaign stumbles, including the now infamous "macaca" moment.
The new George Allen is a different animal. Sure, there are still the cowboy boots, dipping tobacco and sports metaphors, but now they're accompanied by a rigid sense of discipline, focus and caution.
Anticipating an easy re-election in 2006 — and with his eyes on a 2008 presidential bid — Allen had recruited a largely out-of-state campaign team led by Dick Wadhams of Colorado. This time, Allen's going with what's worked for him before — a grass-roots effort led by Mike Thomas, who managed Allen's 1993 gubernatorial campaign. |
