DescriptionCardiologist Charles Boustany Jr. is running for Congress.

Boustany, 47, is a Republican running on a platform to bring jobs, health care and better education to the district and the state.

“Obviously, stemming the tide of out-migration is extremely important, and I think a congressman can help the efforts of the governor in terms of trying to bring jobs to the state,” he said.

Boustany, a native of Lafayette, brings to five the number of people who have announced their plans to run for the 7th Congressional District seat now held by U.S. Rep. Chris John, D-Crowley.

John formed an exploratory committee in preparation for a possible run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. John Breaux, D-Crowley, who is retiring.

Boustany is the second Republican to announce his plans to run for the seat. Lafayette Parish School Board member David Thibodaux, a Republican, also said that he is running.

They will face off against three Democrats — state Sens. Willie Mount, D-Lake Charles, Don Cravins, D-Arnaudville, and retired judge Ned Doucet.
