DescriptionIn a move that will surely stun the political establishment, sources say that Congressman Tim Johnson (R-Urbana) intends to drop out of his reelection race. I’m told by sources that the timing is “imminent” and there will likely be an announcement on Thursday.

Johnson apparently believes that this is now a safe seat since perennial candidate David Gill won the Democratic primary race, so it’s OK to leave without partisan worry.

Possible replacements include Rodney Davis, Rep. Chapin Rose, Rep. Adam Brown, Sen. Sam McCann, Johnson’s former chief of staff Jerry Clarke and his current chief of staff Mark Shelden.

granted, Lane Evans had Parkinsons so that's kind of different.

The go-to is the Lipinskis here.

Lane Evans was unable to properly function without the help of a constant care taker. Johnson has a hand picked successor in line most likely that he knew would not win a district wide primary as did Dan Lipinski.

Then why did Evans run again?

Why did Evans drop out just after the primary then? Did his health deteriorate that quickly?

I'm not disagreeing that Evans did not have a hand picked successor. Evans ran primary because of one Republican candidate, Jim Mowen, who he knew would win a General Election battle against whomever the Democrats nominated in his place. When Andrea Zinga won the nomination he took he same belief Tim Johnson apparently has though I think Dr. Gill may have a slight better chance in this new district then Johnson might want to give him credit for.

And yes, Evans health did deteriorate very quickly from January to March 2006.

Just because there was an underlying health condition doesn't make the rationale any different. Evans probably wanted to wait and see who won the Republican primary and make a retirement decision then with a hand-picked successor in place. Looks like Johnson did the same thing.

Monsieur: Why did Evans drop out just after the primary then? Did his health deteriorate that quickly?

Plagiarism alert. If his health was that bad, how is doing today?

Evans can't talk, can't eat, can't walk, can't even use the bathroom without help, lives in assisted living, and is in very bad condition.

OK, fine. That's not my point.

Fine. He couldn't do all that. Why did he run then?

I said why, its the reason Johnson ran again, a potential strong opponent in the opposing primary.

Maybe Johnson made a snap decision after seeing his phone bill, since he spends about four hours a day calling constituents. Anyway, I kind of like him since he's not always predictable.
