Description | Vander Plaats presented petitions signed by about 20,000 people calling for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman.
Shortly after the first rally, supporters of same-sex marriage met outside the Statehouse and warned that overturning Iowa's equality law would be a huge step backward for civil rights.
"The truth needs to be told, Bob Vander Plaats needs to get a real job instead of working to spread a message of hate and discrimination," said Sen. Matt McCoy.
Same-sex marriage backer Calla Rongerude said marriage is not about cameras and sound bites, but about the commitment of two people regardless of gender. The resolution has passed the House but hasn't been brought up for debate in the Senate.
