DescriptionINDIANAPOLIS — Though the May 8 primary is the only set of votes that counts, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock won a Saturday morning straw poll over the man he is trying to unseat, Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar.

Mourdock won 61 of the 69 votes cast by precinct committeemen who had gathered for an event at the A&A Banquet Hall in Muncie, Ind. That's 88 percent, and Mourdock called it momentum.

"I am grateful that so many of the committeemen — the Republican Party faithful — in Delaware and Henry counties are supporting my efforts to take conservative leadership to the U.S. Senate," Mourdock said.

"Like a growing number of primary voters, they realize that Dick Lugar, who hasn't owned a home in Indiana since 1977, is out of touch."
