DescriptionNebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy said Friday he wants his boss' job once Republican Gov. Dave Heineman's term ends.

Sheehy said he plans to file paperwork later this month or early next month to run in 2014. Heineman will be term-limited out of office in January 2015.

"I have the best job, and I get to see the best of Nebraska every day," he said by phone from the state's Oregon Trail Days festivities in Gering. "I've served six and a half years as lieutenant governor, and I've enjoyed the experience. For me, it just seems like a logical step to run for governor."

Sheehy, a 51-year-old Republican from Hastings, was sworn in as lieutenant governor in January 2005. He said he already had garnered widespread support from Nebraskans who have volunteered to serve as county campaign chairmen.
