Description | One of the strangest congressional districts in the nation just got a little stranger.
Former State Rep. Mary Waters, D-Detroit, has jumped into the race for the 14th congressional district, which runs from southwest Detroit, through the Grosse Pointes, across northern Detroit and into Oakland County up to Pontiac.
She’ll face U.S. Reps. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, Hansen Clarke, D-Detroit, and Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence in the August primary election.
Waters came close to winning a seat in Congress in 2008 when she went up against former U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, mother to former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
But Kilpatrick narrowly won her seat back and Waters’ fortunes faded when she pleaded guilty in 2010 to a misdemeanor count of filing a false tax return related to a bribery scandal involving her one-time boyfriend Sam Riddle. She tried to withdraw her plea, but the U.S. Court of Appeals affirmed the plea last year and Waters was sentenced to one year of probation.
Waters couldn’t be reached for comment this morning, but she’s posted a Facebook page for her campaign, which says, “Hard times call for a dedicated, ambitious, and devoted Humanitarian. I understand the tough times we face, perseverance has become a way of life for me.
“I am ready to work for our seniors, to fight for safer neighborhoods, to assist single mother households and address the concerns of Detroit citizens,” the Facebook posting said. |
