DescriptionDemocrats are holding caucuses tonight as well, and while most of the nation’s attention is on the Republican field, they have started quietly falling in line behind Barack Obama.

Gano Whetstone, a retired schoolteacher who lives in downtown Des Moines, took a seat an hour early at a table in the Lincoln High School cafeteria an hour before the caucus started.

“It’s just as important to support the president early,” Whetstone, 67, said. “I don’t believe in waiting until the last minute.”

She said she came here to meet campaign staff, get organized, volunteer her services, and hear from Obama what issues Democrats should emphasize in the campaign. She’s also been keeping an eye on the Republican race, and is pulling for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
